Developmental Piece

Dwell

Dwell is a piece that I made with the intent of adapting different elements of development into one creation. When given a concept or task, it is often in my curiosity to meld as many possibilities of that idea into my work as I can, and this piece is no exception.

The piece begins arguably quite basic, with little more than layers of gentle synthesisers, however it gradually integrates in layers of guitars, vocals and simple percussion. These all slowly develop and work together, peaking audibly, and especially in the vocal line, at the 'Golden Ratio' an important part of mathematics in both nature and human development, it is know as the sum of a and b where a is to b as a+b is to a. As I had 140 bars of music, I calculated that the golden ratio for this particular piece would be 86.5 bars in.

Within each instrument I also aimed to have some form of development, be it big or small. For the Main Guitar chords for instance, that occur during most of the piece, I very slowly over the course of the piece changed the chord progressions one chord at a time. In the Guitar Melody I focused on a more obvious development of a main melody slowly progressing in difficulty and intricacies. In the vocal line, aside from using the Golden Ratio, I also used a very loose concept of gradual, note by note development, where with each bar or repeat of a tune, a note is added or modified.
