Conzert

Conzert is a solo piece designed for Trumpet with a very familiar yet exciting feel designed for an intermediate trumpet player. It has been shaped and rewritten constantly to fit what I believe to be the 'golden solution' for a trumpet piece, if it were to be played by myself. I believe a trumpet piece should roll off the fingers and tongue; it should be smooth to play once mastered but still display an array of colour through the melody. One such piece that gratefully influenced my writing is Concert Etude Op.49 by Alexander Goedicke. Possibly one of my greatest achievements in my final year of High school, aside from playing the Last Post, was being able to perform this piece in its entirety.

The original plan for my piece was to simply write what came to my head and work from there, after a few attempts however I realised my piece was already sounding very simple and repetitive, a trait many of my old pieces begin with. I then developed a three new ideas based of my previous failed attempts. If I like an idea I often feel it a waste to discard and will attempt to incorporate it into the piece it originated from somehow, and as such this piece uses three ideas combined. From these three ideas I then created a variation for each of them and moulded them to smoothly flow throughout the piece. The form could be considered Variation Form (A B A1 C A2 B1 A) with slight alterations, as Conzert concert has a form as follows A B C B1 A1 C1 A.

As well as my writing style, my piece has been shaped by my own experiences in playing trumpet as well as the way I adapted both myself and the pieces to make them easier to perform and the ideals I adopted from these pieces. Each of the themes serve a different purpose for the performers benefit. The first section of the piece is intended to be fast and exciting, grabbing the audiences attention and drawing in even the performer. I often found when performing that I was exhausted after the first section, especially if I was not physically prepared. It is for this reason the second theme as well as the second variation of part A, is slightly more relaxed, to give them a rest after the first bout and to prepare them for the third section. This section is a slower melodic section in the higher register of the trumpets range, to create a feeling of grace. It is evident much of my piece is influenced by Concert Etude, even the title is just a variation of what I once referred to the piece as, but outside of the structure and nature of my piece the tune itself has been entire written with little inspiration thought but to fulfil its purpose for the performer.
