Piano Arrangement for Full Orchestra
Valse Romantique by Claude Debussy
A beautiful piece Piano piece by Claude Debussy, I was tasked with arranging Valse Romantique for full Orchestra. After filtering through countless piano pieces, most of which were by Debussy, I narrowed it down to this wonderful piece. At first I found it to be an easy piece to arrange, there was a clear melody and harmonies with melodies that seemed to fit particular instruments well, but as I progressed through the piece and it developed it became noticeably harder for me. In arranging this piece, I was fortunate to discover a website, the Vienna Symphonic Library, which provided me a useful guide to instrumental combinations.
After finishing my piece I admittedly looked up other orchestral arrangements, not to judge my own but to simply compare, and was astonished to find much of it similar, at least for the first half of the piece. I believe it to be a combination of the piece getting progressively more complex and my own waning will to understand the piece that caused a audible decrease in quality, although I feel I am exaggerating quite a bit.
Before starting the piece, I was concerned as to how I would 'beef' out the piece so to speak, from one instrument to around 30 without completely altering the piece. As I got into it however I found myself coming up with new ideas for how I could spread out the harmony and give a more equal distribution of playing parts.
